At Forward Spine Center, our goal is not only to alleviate your pain but also to identify its root cause. For many of us, it's repetitive stress, especially from sitting for extended periods. Often, it's sitting in poor posture or improper breathing.

Check List #1: Remove your wallet or anything from your back pocket that disrupts the alignment of your pelvis and position the steering wheel to accommodate your body.

  • Pull the steering wheel closer to you, keeping your elbows close to your body and shoulders relaxed. Now, adjust your mirrors so that you sit up tall. After sitting for a while, we tend to slouch, but the mirrors can serve as a reminder to sit straight.

Check List #2: The seat and your legs

  • Aim for a 90-degree angle while sitting. You can place a pillow or lumbar support behind you, or even roll up a towel to achieve that optimal angle. If you have lumbar support in your car, make sure it's inflated to provide adequate support for your lower back.

  • Pay attention to the headrest as well. Avoid pushing your head forward, as it stresses your neck unnecessarily. Keep it in a neutral position.

  • Additionally, consider wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare.

  • Adjust your knees, keeping them aligned with your heels and toes. This alignment not only protects your knees but also prevents tightness in your hip flexors.

  • Taking regular breaks during your drive is essential for maintaining a healthy spine.

Finally, enjoy some good music or listen to a podcast while you drive. It can enhance your overall experience. Thank you for choosing Forward Spine Center and allowing me to be a part of your journey toward better health. I'm Dr. Madeline, signing off.
