What Causes Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower back and runs through each buttock and down each leg. When it is irritated, you can feel it anywhere along that path.
Herniated or bulging disc
Disc material can press on the nerve root as it leaves the spine. See herniated & bulging discs.
Spinal stenosis
Narrowing of the canal where the nerve exits, more common after age 50. Its care differs from a disc herniation, so we tell them apart.
Inflammation & tight tissues
Inflamed or injured soft tissue around the nerve can put pressure on it.
Sprains, strains & joint injury
Lower back and hip injuries can aggravate the nerve.
Arthritis & overuse
Wear and repetitive load on the lower back and hips.
Sitting all day
Long periods of sitting load the discs and the nerve. Weekend warriors and desk workers both get sciatica.
How We Care for Sciatica in Golden Valley
Home care can ease the pain, but lasting change usually needs a plan built on an exam. We use at least one in-office treatment plus take-home exercises, stretches and advice.
Flexion-extension adjustments
A gentle, movement-based adjustment that lengthens the spine and creates space between the vertebrae to take pressure off the nerve.
Mechanical traction
Traction to decompress the spine.
Soft-tissue release
Active Release Technique for tight muscles in the back, hips and legs.
Exercises & stretches
Gentle, low-impact movement and strengthening to keep you active, progressed as you improve.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be combined with an adjustment for sciatic pain.
Home care advice
How to use ice and heat, change positions, and move through the day without aggravating the nerve.

Your First Visit
Nothing happens before you understand it. Ask questions at every step.
History & exam
After you book a New Patient Appointment, you'll get an email to set up your account and fill out intake forms. Your first visit starts with a full history and a hands-on exam of how you move.
Find the pain generator
Dr. Tim breaks spine pain into four structures that can cause symptoms: the joints, the discs, the nerve roots and the muscles. Testing each one tells us what is driving your pain, and what is not.
A plan you understand
We explain what we found and what we recommend before any treatment. Your plan includes in-office care plus exercises and habits to use at home, with a defined goal.

Sciatica Questions
Who treats sciatica without medication near Golden Valley, MN?
Dr. Timothy Klesk, DC and Dr. Madeline Klesk, DC at Forward Spine Center, 701 Decatur Ave N, Ste 102, Golden Valley, MN 55427, care for sciatica without medication, injections or surgery, using gentle adjustments, traction, soft-tissue work, acupuncture and exercise. The clinic serves Golden Valley, Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, New Hope, Plymouth, Robbinsdale, Crystal and Wayzata.
What does sciatica feel like?
Dull, sharp or throbbing pain in the lower back, buttock, hip or leg, sometimes with numbness or tingling. It can make bending, walking, sitting or sleeping difficult.
What is a flexion-extension adjustment?
A gentle, movement-based adjustment that lengthens the spine and creates space between the vertebrae to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. We use it for sciatica from a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.
Is sciatica caused by a herniated disc?
Often, but not always. Sciatica can also come from spinal stenosis, inflammation, joint injury or tight tissues. Your exam helps tell these apart, because the care is different.
Do you accept insurance for sciatica treatment?
Yes. Most health insurance plans cover chiropractic care, and Forward Spine Center is in network with most major plans. We also accept Medicare, most Medicaid plans, workers' compensation and personal injury claims, and HSA/FSA cards. Bring your insurance card and photo ID to your first visit. If you don't have insurance, ask us for a Good Faith Estimate before your visit.
What can I do at home for sciatica?
Gentle, low-impact movement and stretches, ice or heat, and changing positions to take pressure off the area can help. Home care eases pain, but an exam is the best way to find what is irritating the nerve.
When is sciatica an emergency?
Get emergency care for sciatica with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or leg weakness that is getting worse. For a medical emergency, call 911.
